LUMI retains its position as Europe’s fastest supercomputer

the LUMI supercomputer

The new Top500 list of the fastest supercomputers was released today at the SC23 conference in Denver, Colorado. LUMI, EuroHPC Joint Undertaking’s flagship supercomputer, retained its position as the most powerful supercomputer in Europe reaching a measured High-Performance Linpack (HPL) performance of 379.7 petaflops on this biannual list. Globally LUMI positioned fifth on the Top500 list – the list was topped by the Frontier supercomputer by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the USA.

– It is great to see LUMI excelling on the Top500 list once again. LUMI has already enabled groundbreaking results in research and innovation, supporting for example the development of a digital twin of the Earth which will greatly advance climate and environmental research and policy-making. LUMI has also been used to create large language models that form the basis of generative AI solutions, and also to develop hybrid computing solutions together with Finland’s first quantum computer Helmi. LUMI and other EuroHPC supercomputers are indeed prime examples of infrastructures that help build Europe’s critical competences, says Kimmo Koski, Managing Director of CSC – IT Center for Science, on behalf of the LUMI Consortium.

– LUMI’s exceptional rankings across various benchmarks are a clear demonstration of its energy efficiency and computational speed. By securing once again a very prominent position in the Top500 list, LUMI showcases the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking’s visionary approach, standing at the forefront of shaping the future of European scientific exploration and the convergence of artificial intelligence. This accomplishment underscores the commitment of the EuroHPC and the LUMI Consortium toward pioneering research and innovation, says Anders Dam Jensen, Executive Director of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking.

Remarkable list positions

LUMI supercomputer reached the seventh spot on the new Green500 list which biannually ranks supercomputers from the Top500 list in terms of energy efficiency. The GFlops/Watts ratio for LUMI is 53.4, making it one of the greenest supercomputers in the world.

On the new HPCG list (High-Performance Conjugate Gradient) LUMI was ranked number three, with an improved result of 4.587 pflop/s, which reflects the increased GPU capacity and improvements to the interconnect of LUMI in the third phase of installations. The HPCG benchmark provides an alternative metric for assessing supercomputer performance from the memory-bandwidth bound applications point of view, and is meant to complement the HPL measurement.

In addition, LUMI was listed in the HPL-MxP benchmark as number two with its 2.350 exaflops performance. The HPL-MxP benchmark probes the system capability for converged high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, which was one of the design goals of LUMI.

The LUMI system is supplied by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), based on an HPE Cray EX supercomputer. The supercomputer is owned by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and hosted by the LUMI consortium, including ten European countries.
