LUMI powers TildeOpen, Europe’s flagship open-source multilingual AI model

Backed by the European Commission and powered by the LUMI top-tier supercomputer, the launch of TildeOpen marks an important step towards AI sovereignty, offering an open-source multilingual model designed to cover Europe’s full linguistic diversity.

Tilde, a leading European AI and language technology company, has released TildeOpen, a unique open-source foundational language model with 30 billion parameters, specifically designed for Europe’s languages. Optimized for multilingual performance, TildeOpen is up to 30% more efficient in processing European languages than leading global models, requiring fewer computational resources for text generation.

Supported by the European Commission and trained on Europe’s leading-edge supercomputer LUMI, TildeOpen embodies Europe’s ambition for digital sovereignty and trustworthy AI aligned with European values.

Strong performance across European languages

Most commercial AI models are trained primarily on English, which often results in poor quality for smaller European languages. This creates a gap for over 200 million Europeans whose languages are overlooked by global providers.

TildeOpen directly addresses this challenge. It covers 34 languages, including all 24 official EU languages, plus Ukrainian, Norwegian, Icelandic, Turkish, and Balkan languages. In benchmarks, it has demonstrated significant efficiency gains compared to global leaders:

  • Latvian: +41% vs LLaMA-3, +24% vs GPT-4o
  • Lithuanian: +37% vs LLaMA-3, +18% vs GPT-4o
  • Finnish: +31% vs LLaMA-3, +11% vs GPT-4o
  • Estonian: +28% vs LLaMA-3, +9% vs GPT-4o
  • Polish: +28% vs LLaMA-3, +36% vs Mistral, +16% vs GPT-4o

These results make the model not only more accurate, but also smaller, faster, and significantly more sustainable in real-world use, providing a true European alternative to English-centric AI.

Built on one of Europe’s leading supercomputers, LUMI

The development of TildeOpen was made possible after Tilde won the European Commission’s Large AI Grand Challenge in 2024, which awarded 2 million GPU hours on the LUMI supercomputer. Training leveraged LUMI’s AMD Instinct™ MI250X accelerators and advanced frameworks to complete a 30B+ parameter model in just over a year.

Currently team is extending TildeOpen’s context length from 8k to 64k tokens, enabling the processing of entire books, long technical documents, and multilingual legal texts that is essential for Europe’s competitiveness.

– For Europe to be truly sovereign in AI, we cannot depend on English-centric models built outside our borders. TildeOpen proves that Europe can create its own world-class foundation models – secure, multilingual, and built for our unique linguistic diversity. This is not just a research milestone, it is a resource for governments, institutions, and businesses to build their own national language models, said Artūrs Vasiļevskis, CEO of Tilde.

Trustworthy and open by design

Unlike commercial models hosted in non-European data centers, TildeOpen can be deployed locally or within trusted European cloud infrastructures, ensuring compliance with EU privacy and data protection standards. Developed in line with the EU AI Act and the General-Purpose AI Code of Practice, the model is trustworthy by design and aligned with European values.

TildeOpen is released as open source under a CC-BY-4.0 license and is available now on Hugging Face: TildeAI/TildeOpen-30b. Governments, researchers, and businesses across Europe are invited to explore, adapt, and build upon the model.

– The release of our foundation model is only the first step. LUMI’s power was essential to make this milestone possible, and it will remain just as important for the future. As we move forward, we will continue to fine-tune TildeOpen with business case scenarios — and for that we need powerful and trustworthy infrastructure like LUMI, Vasiļevskis continues.
